Rinse FM is a London-based community radio station that began as an illegal pirate station and has since become a global media empire. Playing mainly underground music from the UK, as well as global sounds, the concepts of rebellion, self-expression, and the underground are at the essence of who they are and what they have built over the years.
I wanted to recreate the experience of searching for the station on a radio dial, in an abstract way. I aimed to represent searching for a pirate radio station with a radio dial, but in a modern screen-based context. I created an interactive digital experience where you sift through a field of floating cubes, representing static, to find the radio station. I added an audio component, you start with the sound of static and the closer you get to the station you can hear music.

Process
In the process of this project, I explored concepts of underground music and pirate radio culture using mouse/ screen-space interaction in TouchDesigner. I used this research to recreate the experience of searching for a pirate radio station, incorporating both digital interaction and audio feedback.
Once the project was completed, I documented the experience with a screen recording that highlights the functionality and experience of the interaction through both touch and sound. The touch component of the mouse shifts the "static" around, supplemented by audio feedback distinguishing static from music. Once you "find the station", the static becomes audio reactive and moves to the music.
